Mindful Kids Camp at Wild Thing Yoga

Join us for Mindful Mondays starting January 8, 2018 from 4:00 - 5:00 PM at Wild Thing Yoga! Each week we'll explore mindfulness in a playful and hands-on way, integrating movement into each class. What's the deal with mindfulness and why is it so important for children to practice?  

Jon Kabat-Zinn wrote, “We do not know what specific knowledge our children are going to most need ten or twenty or even five years from now because the world and their work, when they come to it, will be so different from ours. What we do know is that they will need to know how to pay attention, how to focus and concentrate, how to listen and how to learn, and how to be in wise relationship with themselves - and with others. As you will see, that skill set, this approach to learning and embodied knowing, lies at the heart of mindfulness.”

The practice of mindfulness at any age is both simple and profound, and research has shown that there are many benefits of mindfulness for children. It helps them to recognize their emotions and empowers them to choose their response versus quickly reacting. It strengthens their “attention muscle” and accesses the parts of the mind that deal with focus, decision-making, and self-regulation. It supports and enhances learning, emotional intelligence, and overall well-being across the lifespan.

Mindfulness is simply being fully engaged in the present moment with a mindset of kindness and curiosity, but it’s a capacity that must be tapped, developed, and deepened through practice. A mindfulness practice offers an effective path for children to develop healthy responses to a chaotic world around them and within them. Over the course of six weeks, we’ll introduce the basics of mindfulness to children in an easy-to-understand and playful way. We will cultivate presence of mind, heart, and body and empower children to be kind to themselves and others. We'll have fun, be silly, and learn in a hands-on way.  Join us! 

OBJECTIVES

  1. Children will gain an understanding of what it means to be present and how it can impact their lives.

  2. Children will gain self-awareness through the practice of breath, guided visualizations, and empowerment activities.

  3. Children will gain awareness of their body through movement practices, nutrition education, and mindful eating.

  4. Children will learn self-management of their emotional expressions.

  5. Children will gain social awareness by practicing kindness, empathy, and gratitude for themselves and those around them.

Cooking Up Love with Pure Joy Kitchen - Dates Announced!

In collaboration with Pure Joy Kitchen, we are pleased to offer cooking and nutrition classes for kids! Children will develop a mindset of self-love by cultivating gratitude for all that their bodies do, learn how the food they eat impacts how their bodies and minds feel, and which foods can help them to feel their best. We'll recreate classic kid favorite recipes using only foods from the earth, empower even the pickiest of eaters to try something new, integrate mindfulness into all that we do, and provide children the tools to create their own nourishing recipes. 

Dates: Tuesdays in February

Time: 5:00 - 6:30 PM

Children age 5-12

Themes: 

- February 6th: Strong Foods and Weak Foods / Chocolate "Donuts"

- February 13th: Trying New Things / Zoodle Spaghetti

- February 20th: Local and Seasonal Foods / Green Monster Smoothies

- February 27th: Food Flavors / DIY Salad & Salad Dressing

Price includes four, one and a half-hour classes with all materials, healthy small meals, and a take-home recipe book. 

Investment: $75 for all four classes, $25 drop-in rate

Grateful Hearts: Children's Gratitude Workshop at OutsideIN 

Celebrate Valentine's Day early by harnessing the power of gratitude! In collaboration with OutsideIN, we are offering a donation-based mindfulness and movement class on Thursday, February 8th from 6:00 - 7:00 PM, with an emphasis on gratitude.

Adding a gratitude practice to your everyday life can provide a massive shift in how you perceive the world. One of my favorite analogies is that gratitude allows us to stop wondering if the grass is greener on the other side because we’re so busy enjoying how green our own grass is. It’s the same for kids - quick, daily practices of noticing the small things in life can lead to a more positive emotional state and a greater feeling of connection to the world and others. During our hour together, we'll do a short yoga practice and guided meditation, read "All My Treasures: A Book of Joy" by Jo Witek, then create our own "treasure box" full of things we're grateful for. Children can take the treasure boxes home to add to each time they recognize something they're grateful for, reinforcing this impactful mindset.

We also offer in-home instruction using your current curriculum or Obsidian Education's curriculum, for children age five to twelve, available on an hourly or daily basis.
